Soy protein and its hydrolysate reduce body fat of dietary obese rats

This study examined the influence of soybean protein isolate (SPI) and its hydrolysate (SPI-P) on weight and body fat reductions in dietary obese rats. Four-wk-old Sprague-Dawley male rats were fed a high fat diet containing 30% fat for 3 mo, and then fed the weight reduction diets containing 35% (Nx6.25) of casein, SPI or SPI-P for 4 wks. Total calories of weight reduction diets were restricted to 60% of calories in commercial diet group. Body fat of rats fed high fat diet for 3 mo was 27%. Weight reductions in the obese rats fed SPI and SPI-P diets were slightly more than in those fed casein diet. Although the apparent digestibility of dietary protein was not different among all groups, that of dietary fat was significantly lower in the SPI and SPI-P groups than in the casein group. The apparent nitrogen balance during the weight reduction period was slightly negative in all the groups, but the nitrogen loss was lower in the SPI and SPI-P groups than in the casein group. Although the amount of body nitrogen was not different among all the groups, differences in the body fat before and after the weight reduction period of rats fed SPI and SPI-P diets were more than those fed casein diet. Body fat in the rats fed SPI-P diet was significantly lower than in those fed casein diet. The weights of all fat pads were also lower in rats fed SPI and SPI-P diets than in rats fed casein diet. Plasma total cholesterol level was significantly lower in the rats fed SPI-P diet than in those fed casein diet. These results suggest that SPI and SPI-P are a good protein source in weight reduction diets for dietary obese rats.
