In the oriental societies, miso has been traditionally used in a daily diet as part of food or as a flavor and is still one of the essential requisite for japanese style cooking. It is made either one or combination of bean, rice, cereal or oat. We started to study the tumor preventive effect of miso, soy bean and biochanin A, an isoflavone, in the tumors of liver, mammary gland ( MT) and intestinal tracts.
Study on liver tumorigenesis; Either spontaneous tumors in male C3H mice or 256Cf fission neutron induced tumors in both sexes of BCF 1 mice were observed by giving 10% miso containing diet throughout experimental period of 13 months. Both tumor incidence and multiplicity were significantly reduced in mice received 10% miso compared to those of miso with control diet.
Study of mammary tumorigenesis:7 weeks old female SD rats were once given i.v. 50 mg/kg body weight of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU). They were observed for 18 weeks after MNU treatment. Throughout experimental period, individual groups of rats were fed with 1) control, 2) 10% miso, 3) 2% or 10% soy bean, 4) 10ppm or 50ppm biochanin A. All experimental substances were more or less inhibitory for the occurrence and multiplicity of mammary tumors. Subsequently, we combined 10% miso and 2.5 mg tamoxifen (TAM) containing cholesterol pellet implanted s.c. together with individual treatment. A combination of miso and TAM completely inhibited the occurrence of MT.
The results indicated miso and biochanin A including soy bean are effective substances for rodent tumor prevention and may be good for human health.
